Teaching Activity
A worksheet can be downloaded which lists all the 100 Welsh heroes who have been nominated, in order of the number of nominations they received. It gives the century in which they were born and the category in which they have been nominated.
Each of the pupils who is carrying out the activity will need a copy of the worksheet.
- The pupils are asked whether they think most of the heroes are historical figures from a very long time ago, or whether they are from the present day or the recent past. One way to answer this is by looking at the century in which they were born. How can they can find this out from the data in the table?
- As it stands, the data in the table is difficult to use to answer the question. It would be easier to understand if it were represented differently, as a tally chart or bar chart. The pupils should compile a tally chart first with a line for each century (there will some centuries for which there are no heroes) and then use this to draw the bar chart. This will involve making decisions on the best intervals for the vertical axis, and whether to include all centuries on the horizontal axis, or just those in which at least one hero was born.
Extension Activity
Does the category for which the heroes are nominated make any difference to whether they are historical figures or more recent heroes? To discover the answer, the pupils will have to go back to the original table and compile separate tally charts for each of the categories showing century of birth, and then draw up separate bar charts for each category. This activity could be carried out by different groups, each taking a category. Results could be compared between categories and the main chart, and possible reasons for the results discussed.
