Teaching Activity 4: English - reading (non-fiction)

Newspapers provide a range of material for looking at the ways gender roles and stereotypes are dealt with. For example, a study of the sports pages could be made to find out how many column centimetres are devoted to men's sport, and how many to women's. Are there any differences here between broadsheet and tabloid papers?. The articles on the sports pages, as well as articles on the news pages, could also be used to examine differences in the ways women are described. In some cases it might be appropriate to provide only sections of newspapers, or to photocopy relevant articles.
