Teaching Activity 3: English - reading (fiction)
Texts which contribute to a consideration of gender roles and of the concept of 'heroes' and 'heroines' are read either as class or individual activity. These texts might range from traditional fairy stories and Welsh folk tales, to contemporary fiction. They can be examined to see how the characters and story conform to gender stereotypes (or not) and the language can be examined to discover (for example) the range of adjectives used to describe the male and the female characters. Two contemporary fiction books which might be used are The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler by G.Kemp (Puffin, 1979) and Anne Fine's Bill's New Frock (Egmont, 1989).
