The Categories

Through the centuries Welsh people have excelled in every sphere of human endeavour. We invited you to nominate heroes in 5 categories. The 20 who received the most nominations in each category make up the list of 100 Welsh Heroes.

Leaders

From ancient kings to contemporary politicians, the most nominated Leaders span nearly fifteen hundred years of Welsh history.

Some achieved greatness in battle, others through the ballot box. One ended his days in a royal palace, another at the gallows.

All commanded the devotion of their followers and have earned their places in the history books.

Thinkers

From spiritual matters to information technology, our Thinkers have helped to shape the world and the way we see it.

Here Nobel Prizewinners rub shoulders with the self-taught.

Their thoughts have produced great inventions, social reforms and popular movements.

Some Thinkers altered the course of history while others are now influencing the future.

Performers

Performers from Wales, in both sport and entertainment, have always enjoyed worldwide success with each generation producing a host of new stars.

From singers to wingers and from boxers to rockers, performing talent is perhaps our most celebrated export.

It's no surprise this category saw the most nominations. But can a Performer be the greatest Welsh person of all time?

Creative

The Welsh are well-known for their power with words. Less so for visual art and design skills.

Our list of the most nominated Creatives corrects that misimpression.

Among the novelists and poets here you'll find painters and designers as well.

Plenty of words then, and a lot of action too.

Groundbreakers

Some people follow a well- trodden path in life. Not our top 20 Groundbreakers.

All are true originals whose achievements are unique. Some have become very famous, some very rich.

Others have just quietly exerted an influence in their own special ways.

These are the people who defy categorisation.
